Wyndham Vale Primary School

Wyndham Vale South Primary School is located on Melbourne’s western fringes within a new Estate development in Wyndham Vale. For young children beginning their education, recognition of place and memory of an environment are important. Carefully considered material and joinery form meaningful, flexible learning spaces. Hexagon carpet tile placed in non-liner forms and clusters create a concentrated blue heart in the centre of each of the learning zones where students from different classes collectively meet and share in learning together. Grey hexagonal carpet tiles appear to disperse from the central zone, eventually meeting with a dark charcoal carpet tile from the Pacific range in each of the classrooms. This design influences the way students move in and around the space, providing a blurred transition from individual classrooms to open learning spaces that is fun, engaging and memorable. Open spaces with no corridors maintain visual transparency and support connectedness between settings while facilitating flow and movement. Essentially, every space becomes a learning space and the connectivity between staff and students is enhanced.

The hexagon carpet tile’s ability to create non linear forms and clusters assisted in achieving this perfectly. We used the tiles in a variety of blues to create the idea of a concentrated blue ‘heart’ in the centre of each of the learning zones – a place for students from different classes to collectively meet and share in learning together. The hexagon carpet tiles appear to disperse from the central zone, through the inclusion of grey hexagon tiles, which eventually meet with a dark charcoal carpet tile from the Pacific range in each of the classrooms. This design works to influence the way students move in and around the space, providing a blurred transition from individual classrooms to open learning spaces that is fun, engaging and memorable. ‘I love our school building because it is a happy place to learn. There is lots of space to learn and have fun in. It is very exciting! I love the hexagons and colours because they are bright and fun.’ - Chante (grade 2).

Environmentally sustainable design principals have been integrated into the project at every opportunity to not only reduce the building's impact on the environment, but to also provide a healthy working environment for staff and students. With the inclusion of WELS rated sanitary fixtures, rainwater tanks for storm water harvesting and toilet flushing, low-E glazing throughout and protective shading devices over windows and points of ingress and egress, combined with the use of the 'Cradle to Cradle' certified Shaw Carpet tiles, the client's sustainability goals were able to be met.
