It's About Health + Well-Being

The definition of sustainability is continually being stretched, especially for the built environment. Increasingly, companies are investing more resources into the health and well-being of their employees.

We’re frequently asked how Shaw Contract products contribute to the WELL Building Standard focusing on people and healthy workspaces.

What is the WELL Building Standard?

The WELL Building Standard® measures, certifies, and monitors the performance of building features that impact health and well-being. The International WELL Building Institute™ upholds the standard, which operates around ten concepts.

Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind & Community.

Flooring and WELL

Flooring covers a substantial area in the building environment and can contribute to environmental credits. Our sustainable philosophies complement several areas within the ten concepts identified in the WELL Building Standard®.

Since the standard is based on occupants’ experiences, flooring can facilitate meaningful experiences and please the senses. From beauty of design, to acoustics, to safe ingredients, Shaw Contract's flooring products can help a project manager reinvent a space’s experience.

WELL Equity Rating

Shaw is also pursuing the WELL Equity Rating, which was designed to help organisations act on their diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and accessibility goals and improve company culture and employee health.

WELL v2 FEATURES

Here's How Our Products Contribute to WELL v2

Air

Shaw Contract believes that the air we breathe should be clean. While not material specific credits, our products definitely can contribute to the ability to achieve credits for the building related to indoor air quality. All of our products are 3rd party certified to ensure our products are low VOC, meeting or exceeding industry standards for indoor emissions.

Sound

Shaw Contract knows that sound affects how we feel, work, sleep, learn and experience our spaces. This is why we launched our science-based award winning tool, Sound Advisor(R) to empower clients to make the right choices for their spaces regarding building design and product selection. While not material specific credits, our products can definitely contribute to the ability to achieve credits for the overall building related to sound absorption and reduction.

Materials

The spaces where we live, work, play, learn and heal have a huge impact on our lives. That’s why we’re committed to using safe ingredients and designing sustainable flooring products. Through our rigorous hazard screening and risk assessment processes for ingredients in addition to the Cradle to Cradle Certified ™ product certification program, we ensure that our products do not contain toxic materials and all of our products are 3rd party certified to ensure that our products are low VOC, meeting or exceeding industry standard for indoor air quality emissions.

Mind

Shaw Contract recognises the numerous benefits exposure to the outdoors has on our wellbeing, many are bringing the outside in, at work and at home. Biophilic design or put more simply: bringing nature in is a concept used by our designers to increase product design connectivity to the natural environment.

Community

Flooring design enhances the occupant experience of community, dignity, comfort, wellbeing, and safety. We strive to gain a deeper personal understanding of human experience and response to colour, texture and the myriad aspects of design. Our designers collaborate, conduct in-depth research, immerse in regional cultures and historical study-all of which inspires our product design.
