Project Description

At its foremost an aged care facility is a home which should enhance the life of the resident in meaningful and connected ways. It was in this spirit that Spowers’ developed a carefully curated aged care residence that through the thoughtful organisation and design of spaces draws in the adjacent nature reserve to full effect. This connection with nature is thematically reinforced through finishes and environments delivering a calming and comforting home to a seniors community. This facility, through design, skilfully combines a calming, uplifting and comfortable setting without resorting to an institutional or clinical feel. Specifically, the selection of floor finishes were used for this purpose as well as zoning spaces for different settings and activities. Carpet tiles and vinyl planks were specified to ensure the ease of ongoing cleaning and maintenance. Social As social interaction is so critical to a resident’s health and wellbeing social spaces have been designed to offer a variety of settings, scale and atmosphere to suit a variety of gatherings and activities. Private dining rooms and the ground floor café are the conduits to enable family and friends to engage as well as the wider community. Wellbeing Exposure to nature assists residents mental and physical wellbeing and is known to reduce stress and anxiety levels, as well as many other physical ailments. Evidenced based design demonstrates the benefits of engagement with the surrounding landscape visually and physically. Safe & Secure The notion of community and neighbourhood informed the organisation of the various spaces in the building. This translated into a wayfinding strategy that was familiar and intuitive providing a sense of safety and comfort for the residents through strategies such as the ‘high street’ where many of the social “assets” (wellness centre, library, gym, theatre) reside to the smaller ‘cul de sacs’ where residents rooms are positioned.
