Brooke Army Medical Center

Employing 10,500 staff members and coming in at over 2 million sq. ft. of space, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas isn’t just a military hospital — it’s the largest military hospital in the world. With a focus on providing top-level care, BAMC chose Shaw Contract as its trusted flooring partner five years ago.

To date, we have installed more than 180,000 sq. ft. of LVT, resilient sheet and carpet tile in the hospital to serve the needs of military service members, their families, veterans and civilian emergency patients.

Flooring for Every Space

As the sole verified Level 1 Trauma Center within the U.S. Department of Defense, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) services 80,000 emergency department visits annually, as well as functions as the premier medical readiness training platform for both the Army and the Air Force, with capacity to serve nearly 500 military and civilian inpatients.

With so many important duties to fulfill, it is vital that all support systems at BAMC work smoothly, helping to increase efficiency and patient comfort. In partnership with the facility director and San Antonio flooring dealer Gomez Floor Covering, Shaw Contract observed a competitor’s resilient sheet failure in the hospital emergency department area, resulting from poor installation and maintenance challenges.

With an aligned strategic partnership, Shaw Contract and Gomez Floor Covering replaced the competitor’s flooring and installed 2,500 sq. ft. of homogeneous Vitality sheet in 10 emergency room trauma bays and 12,000 sq. ft. in the ER common areas.

Maintenance Cost Plummet

After the initial installation, the Shaw Contract technical team performed detailed maintenance training for BAMC environmental services staff, which proved to be a crucial change in the flooring partnership. Shaw experts listened to the staff’s maintenance challenges and presented solutions and best practices in preserving the hospital’s no-wax hard surface flooring.

This flooring has eliminated the need for constant stripping and waxing and has stopped the shutdown of hallways and patient rooms due to maintenance. Since the initial installation, BAMC has saved thousands of dollars by reducing the required maintenance, including approximately $15,000 in the emergency department.

Since the initial installation, more than 180,000 sq. ft. of Shaw Contract homogeneous sheet, LVT and carpet tile have been installed at BAMC. The majority of these Shaw Contract products are in stock, resulting in limited to no downtime at BAMC.

“Over the years, we had experience with every flooring manufacturer and every type of flooring for hospital usage. We made Shaw Contract flooring our BAMC standard flooring based on their track record of superior products and installation. Our maintenance costs have plummeted due to the no-wax Vitality and the PSI resistance to wear.,” said Fred Rhye, Senior Project Manager, BAMC.

“Shaw Contract sent their flooring maintenance expert down for a few days to train our housekeeping staff on the cleaning solutions, buffing pads, RPMs required and the frequency of cleaning. We no longer have to shut down patient rooms and hallways for flooring maintenance.”
