Toyota's philosophy of kaizen, or continuous improvement, was translated into built form with this project. Rejecting the local vernacular of concrete tilt-up or metal shed, the new steel framed, insulated panel clad building is layered and rich in north facing glazing, embracing natural light and external views. Occupant amenity is central to the design team’s vision, an inspiring workplace breakout spaces, external courtyards and landscaping which provide tranquil meeting and informal zones in an otherwise harsh industrial landscape. Fade and Blur 18x36 carpet tiles interlace with the bold colors of Scale, creating a consistency of underlying texture through clearly defines zones and rooms within the largely open plan layout. Cradle to Cradle certification was an essential part of achieving a building with a 5-Star Green Star Design rating. The longevity offered by the solution dyed fiber process was also an important consideration when the conference facilities not only had to endure considerable foot traffic, but also the movement of vehicles used for display purposes within the facility.
