Foundry Eases Design Process

Rachel Maher, designer at K2M Design in Cleveland, Ohio, drew inspiration for the Embassy Suites by Hilton Los Angeles Downey renovation from a local source of pride. For nearly 70 years, Downey housed the NASA production facility responsible for the systems used in the Apollo Space Program as well as other significant U.S. aviation, missile and space endeavors.

The design team wanted to ignite a sense of wonder that was strong enough to leave a lasting impression on guests. To do so, K2M used hues extracted from the twilight sky, flooding a network of spaces laced together by subtle shifts in color, texture and form.

Layered Luxe and Design Journey Cloth & Stone collections were an ideal choice for the project, which required about 10,800 square feet of custom tufted carpet. The style Crease, featuring delicate streaks of color, is a nod to shooting stars with a mottled veil of clouds anchoring the background. The other patterns, Distressed and Mekong Rug, hint at ocean waves and vapor trails of aircraft. The finish palette remains consistently neutral throughout the space to direct attention to architectural installations. Several of the carpet colors have a metallic sheen which adds a subtle glistening to the ambiance.

Shaw Hospitality was an incredible partner throughout the design and installation process. The timeliness of the strike off samples was one of the best of any company I’ve specified. The initial samples were ready within days of submitting my design through Foundry - an incredible tool for experimenting with color and pattern which helped me take the guesswork out of developing a custom carpet.

Property Finds Success with Custom Carpet

When Indiana-based design firm Interior Image Group (IIG) was chosen to revamp the tired and outdated Hilton Hotel in San Bernardino, CA, they looked no further than the landscape’s breathtaking mountain range and famous hot springs for color and texture inspiration.

Hotel management company DKN Hotels in Irvine, CA tasked IIG with creating a boutique hotel aesthetic while maintaining Hilton DoubleTree design standards. The end result: a property overhaul that blends indoors and outdoors, appealing to both business and leisure travelers.

Shaw Hospitality custom carpets from the Design Journey: Cloth & Stone collection are key underlying design components in the remodel, from the entry lounge and business center to the corridors and guest rooms.

"We had a specific design aesthetic we were trying to achieve with this project, and Shaw Hospitality had the patterns to match it. We were striving for organic, contemporary patterns that would wear bright colors well and the Design Journey collection exemplified it perfectly,” said Patti Tritschler, president of Indiana-based Interior Image Group (IIG). “The patterns provided a great design base, and we merely customized these to change the construction, width and scale."
